NEVERMEN | The Reddit Q+A
Nevermen answered many questions and assured us they would be rescheduling. We know much more about the album design and the music and we also found out there isn't any plans for more Peeping Tom, oh and Mike turned down a marriage proposal!
'Hey everyone, thanks for your enthusiasm and interest. Really hope you dig the record. Got a cool video coming soon and we are really sorry about cancelling the shows but hope to see you out there soon. I gotta run, the dogs need to go pee.'
Here are some highlights.
Mike...I have seen you live a handful of times and on several of those occasions, I’ve noticed you like to pick on/call out/shame your fans. It is rather disturbing. Can I just tell you how it feels to be on the receiving end of your ugliness? It feels horrible. To be the fan who has followed you for more than 26 years (more than half my life), who has had life changing moments while your music played in the background, who has scraped and saved and driven countless miles to see your shows, to finally be able to go to that ultimate #1 on the list show to end all shows and be called out and fat shamed in front of thousands of people by someone you had ultimate respect and admiration for...yea...it fucking sucks. Because now everything's ruined, even though I don't want it to be. I CAN'T feel the same when I listen to your music, there is a bitterness where once was awe. It's there despite the fact that I've always acknowledged my weight issues, fought hard against them and have still stood confident and strong with the love of my husband and kids (I am grateful you didn't fat shame me in front of my kids, although I was with my husband and best friend when it happened and their embarrassment for me was even greater than my own, which hurt me more than the initial insult did). As much as I want to keep being a fan, I can't now. I can't respect someone who would do that to a person who has supported and defended them to haters so many times. I'd like to know what you get out of it. Does it make you feel like the clever guy who made your band mates giggle at the fat chick? Do you get a kick out of being a bully to your fans? I would think you are too smart and too old for that. Who am I kidding? I'm sure you don't even remember doing it, much less care. C-ya Patton...
Patton I'm very sorry that I did that. I don't blame you for being upset.
I really want to come up with a deep, sensible question.... But i have nothing!! So all i got is Mike...would you prefer to be attacked by one horse size duck or 12 duck size horses! No seriously...i want to thanku and your music for getting me through some good times and some real crappy times! Looking forward to purchasing the album tomorrow! Belated birthday wishes xx
Patton thanks. I'll go with the little horses. i grew up a cowboy, i can wrangle em.
I'm curious what advice you'd have for artists to be proactive in regards to making a living in the arts. Love what I've heard from the album so far. Can't wait to hear the rest of it.:)
Patton making a living as an Indie artist? ouch, thats the hardest question to answer. there is not a way to do that. if you are fortunate and things go your way, it happens. like playing the lottery. believe in what you do. put in the work. sadly, a lot of the most talented artists in the world will never be discovered and some of the least talented will become famous.
I'm curious what the live show will be like - laptops, electronics & effects? just the 3 of you or will you have a backing band? will there be more US dates outside of NY & LA?
how do you all like your coffee? will Mike stage dive ever again?
Doseone a BIT of "PUTER" due to breadth of instrumentation and gizmos on the record, but shit will be FREAKED, and yes some friends to play with us, the JOY and WORK is getting our 3 HeadedFrontDude on, despite the postponement of the tour, I'm still 600% stoked to gets show on the road!
Mike, what was the approach to writing/recording this album? Just wondering if it was done through correspondence like General Patton and the X-Ecutioners or was it done mostly on a face to face basis. Thank you for filling the last 20 years of my life with a variety of beautiful music.
Patton It was done both ways. Some through correspondence some face to face.
First off, sorry if this question is kind of long, but I need to ask this - how can I become more confident in myself as a musician and a performer? I've got a little electronic/experimental project going and I like the songs I write, but I have zero self-confidence when it comes to singing or performing those songs. I can't sing or perform in front of anyone, not even close friends, because it feels really threatening to do so. Is there anything I can do to get over all these mental hurdles and just put music out to the world, even if I feel afraid to?
Tunde Hey DevoidOfRedemption, not a long question at all. Long answer, tho! I hear you. I think that the most important thing is that you like the songs you're making, and if you like them enough to want to hear them, there's a good chance someone else will, too. As far as getting over the mental hurdles and just doing it, I've never felt "comfortable" before a show. I'm always pretty nervous, and it's a good thing. I think being nervous means that what you're doing actually means something to you. I feel like performing is kinda like jumping off a cliff, keeping in mind that all you gotta do is land. As long as you land, you can get out of there, and it's more about your good (or weird) time while you're up there than anyone else's. I'd just keep working, get a bunch of songs together and play one in front one person, then a few more (friends) just to get used to it. The more you do it, the more you'll realize can be fun, even when it's a disaster. Also, just recording and putting that out and not performing live is also totally TOTALLY fine. You can do it however you want, as long as it keeps your heart going.
Doseone Hey BOSS! In all honesty, not to sound corny here, but its like using the "HI DIVE", at the municipal pool for the first time:), you just gotta jump.
you really have to just "suck" until you don't, that is exactly how i got where i am today, and moreover how every band i am in sounds and feels the first day of rehearsals....you suck until you don't, even at your own songs:), Step one is writing songs...step two is the DIVE man...
Play for people you HATE:) maybe that will help, best of luck doing you tho man!
Sorry to hear of an ailment within the band and hope all’s well. Any news regarding fresh tour dates? My ticket is in limbo with Webster Hall but will leave it be if Nevermen plan to return!
I recognize Doseone from the Peeping Tom record. How did the collaboration with Tunde begin? Is there a main Neverman who writes/performs most of the music?
Patton No news yet on tour dates. Stay tuned. All I can say is STDs are no laughing matter. As far as Tunde, god brought him to the world. He was destined to be a NEVERMAN. We all share the work.
Thanks so much for doing this! I'm stoked about the album. Can't wait until my preorder arrives!
Do any of you have a favorite song off the album?
Obligatory proposal: Mike Patton- I've had a crush on you for 25 years. Wanna get hitched?
Patton let me check with my wife.
Doseone DO IT MIKE!!!!! Mi FAV is HATE ON, always has been, its between that and "At Your Service"... Thanks for lending and Ear Becky!
