One of the more surprising - and very welcome events of the summer is the return of Faith No More. A little over ten years ago when FNM split amid disharmony bitterness, it appeared to be the end of the story. Frontman Mike Patton moved onto increasingly more bizarre and avant-garde projects, frequently insisting that nothing could induce him into working again with bassist Billy Gould, keyboard player Roddy Bottum or drummer Mike Bordin. In December last year, however, there were reports that several UK venues had been put on hold for a possible Faith No More tour in the spring of 2009. Initially, Gould played down these stories, claiming that he hadn't spoken to any of the others in over a year. But in late February, Patton's publicist announced that the man's schedule included summer shows in Europe with Faith No More. In doing so, she'd jumped the gun, as Bordin pointed out : "When that announcement was made, nothing was set at all." Within a couple of days, though, Faith No More formally firmed their return - headlining Friday at Download, and a date at London's Brixton Academy on June 10th - with guitarist Jon Hudson (who was in the last line-up) involved, rather than many people's preferred choice, Jim Martin (who quit in 1993). What's  inspired this return? "For the first time, we've decided to down together and talk about it," said Gould in an official statement. Whatever else might have brought the band back remains mere speculation. They've refused all requests for interviews, concentrating instead on rehearsals, and communicating via their website and Twitter alone. But Bordin has commented that, "So far things are going incredibly well," and the  footage posted on YouTube backs this up. We can't wait.
