MIKE PATTON | Rage TV's Most Regular Guest

The Australian popular late night music TV program rage is celebrating it's 30th year broadcasting.

This week rage will air a documentary detailing thirty years history of the show, with appearances by some of Australia's most beloved musicians.

Mike Patton has a part in this history, he is one of the show's most frequent guest programmers with five appearances from 1990 to 2013. Rage has also showed various Faith No More specials and live concerts over years in support of Patton's work. Plus of course all those other guest programmers who have added FNM videos in their choices, including: Sepultura, Soulfly, Slipknot, Linkin Park , System Of A Down, Incubus and Korn.

August 1990

During Faith No More's first tour of Australia Patton was interviewed by Pip Dann and picked songs including The Village People YMCA, 'A huge huge inspiration to me....they're not influencing our music now but they are influencing me personally....the costumed stage show especially. Just Everything is so tongue in cheek.'  And Red Hot Chili Peppers Show me your Soul, 'I have to watch the singer in the video so I can copy exactly every move that he makes. Cos I wanna be him.'

September 1995

For his second guest spot Patton is joined by Roddy Bottum. We only have a short section of footage during which Roddy picks David Bowie and Bing Crosby Little Drummer Boy, and the same song performed by Rupaul.

November 1997

Patton and Roddy returned during the Album of The Year tour, this time joined by Mike Bordin, to present an eclectic set of videos. Their choices included Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep Mountain High, to which Patton sarcastically explains, 'the reason I wanna play this is because I'm having a little trouble with my marriage right now. And I figured it's really gonna help me to play this video.'

September 2007

Patton and Imani Coppola from Peeping Tom guest programmed rage together. Their choices included Bjork, Rahzel and Massive Attack. Patton spoke a little about Peeping Tom on the rage webpage.

"I don't listen to the radio, but if I did, this is what I'd want it to sound like. This is my version of pop music. In a way, this is an exercise for me: taking all these things I've learned over the years and putting them into a pop format. I've worked with many people who have said to me, 'oh you have a pop record in you, eventually you'll find it,' and I always laughed at them. I guess I owe them an apology."

March 2013

After six years Patton returns whilst on tour with Tomahawk. Clutching a Singapore ball, he introduces videos including the Phil Collins and Philip Bailey classic Easy Lover and gives us some insight into the video for FNM's A Small Victory.
'We spent way too much money on and I think we're still paying for it in lots of ways. It basically looks like a perfume commercial or a fashion shoot.'
